Project Description Country: Nepal Location: Ramechhapp and Sindhuli Total Budget: $6,750 Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development Activity Type: Health: Disease Summary: Eye testing 4,240 villagers and fitting 900 pairs prescription eyeglasses About half the population of Nepal - or 11 million people - live on less than $5/day. Also, 13 of the 77 districts in the country have no eyecare facilities and no eyecare professionals. This lack of eyecare resources, the geographic challenges, and the poor infrastructure make distribution of eyeglasses either too costly for such a poor country or altogether impossible. This project is designed to fill that gap. It will provide eye exams to 4,240 people in the seven villages where RAW has rebuilt schools. It will give customized corrective prescription glasses to the approximately 900 students and adults that we anticipate will need them. Sudip Koirala will lead the project. He is a leading Rotarian in Nepal who has managed RAW projects across the country for more than a decade. He also is the Nepal Country Director for DOT Glass a privately held company based in Czech Republic. He and his team have been trained by DOT and have been providing DOT eyeglasses in Nepal for more than a year. Each pair of customized eyeglasses costs $7.50.
