Project Description Country: USA Location: Southeast San Diego Total Budget: $6,000 Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Back to School Supplies & Backpacks for Baker Elementary, Healthy Kids Program at JRYMCA & After school STEM Baker Elementary is a Title 1 school with 350+ students from low income families who are unable to afford basic school supplies. Child health and obesity is at a all time high in the Southeast San Diego community due to limited access to fresh, healthy food and lack of education on healthy meal planning on a limited income. We particpate in Healthy Kids Day, to show kids & parents how to make healthy snacks, provide healthy snacks and new reading books for the kids, more than 2,000 kids attend the event. We partner with the Elementary Institue of Science (EIS) to fund scholarships for low-income students to attend the after-school STEM program that teaches science, technology, engineering & math. Club members are involved in all 3 projects doing everything from buyng, packing and delivering school supplies, working with the kids during Healthy Kids Day and volunteering at EIS to help with STEM projects.
