Project Description Country: USA Location: Dana Point Total Budget: $2,528 Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Provide water safety education to 640 students in three elementary school in Dana Point, CA and Laguna Niguel, CA Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1-14 in the United States. For each drowning death, it is estimated that at least 1 to 4 children suffer a serious nonfatal submersion event, many of which leave children with permanent disabilities. The Josh the Otter book and program was started by a Rotarian who lost his 2 year old child to drowning. The Josh the Otter program packets include books on drowning prevention through learning to float as well as stickers for children and the appearance of Josh the Otter in a mascot costume. We propose buying 640 program packets for the RH Dana Elementary School, Palisades Elementary School, and Malcolm Elementary School children and presenting the Josh the Otter Program between August 2023 and June 2024. Club members will order the books, hand out the books, dance with the kids, read the books to the children, and dress up in the Josh the Otter mascot costume.
