Summary: Potable water spring development benefiting 1,578 rural people in Laga Chali, East Wollega Zone, Ethiopia.
Most rural people in Ethiopia lack readily accessible potable water. This is true of the people and school near the Laga Chali spring. Dr. Fekadu Tamiru Gebissa, Assistant Professor of Geophysics, Earth Sciences Department, Wolllega University, submitted this proposal to clean and cap the Laga Chali spring and pipe the water to three collection points and two clothes washing points. This project will provide potable water to an estimated 1,578 people including a school. Dr. Fekadu did the engineering work and supervision for this project and a previous water project. This project addresses three of Rotary's seven areas of focus: Disease Prevention and Treatment; Water and Sanitation; and Maternal and Child Health.
The technology behind this project is the same as implemented in Global Grant 1524109 (spring development for each of three villages) and District Grant P-3938 (spring development for each of two villages). Laga Chali and the previously mentioned two grant projects are in distinctly different areas of Ethiopia (see map). This project will be supported by the Nekemte Rotary Club which will make visits to the site, provide a bank account for moving funds, and distribute the funds to Dr. Fekadu who in return will provide all receipts for merchandize and materials. The project duration is expected to be less than one year. The project area is only 21 miles from Nekemte. The full proposal is attached (with pictures) and includes a complete budget.
The funds will be used for materials and contracted labor. The total cost of the project is $10,707 and will be funded as shown:
