Project Description Country: USA Location: Cheyenne, Wyoming Total Budget: $1,600 Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention Activity Type: Peace: General Summary: We take Veterans enrolled in a PTSD recovery program on a trolley ride with other participants and Rotarians. The Cheyenne Veteran's Hospital offers a residential program for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program is limited to 10 veterans from around the country who reside at the Veteran's Hospital for about 8 weeks. This proposed project would fund a Cheyenne Trolley ride and snacks for the veterans attending this treatment. In addition to providing a wonderful orientation/Welcome to the veterans who are visitors to Cheyenne, the Trolley rides would be a tangible way for the Cheyenne Rotary Club to recognize the service and sacrifice these veterans have given for our nation. There will be approximately 14 people on each trolley ride (10 veterans; 2 hospital staff; and 2 Rotarians). We rotate interested Rotarians to go on the Trolley ride. We held this project in 2022 and it has been very successful. Cheyenne Rotary Club member Judy Weikum helps with this project and shared a touching story with me. She explained to me that one of the group organizers expressed how grateful they were for the project as there was one Veterans that did not say much until after the trolley ride - he started to open up. Just one example of our we are fulfilling Paul Harris's mission of changing the world one life at a time. In 2023, we have a schedule for 8 trolley rides with Veterans. Randy 27-Apr-23 by Traci Lacock The trolley rides are held every 8 weeks (which is the length of time each group is treated at the VA), beginning January 2023. 12 veterans are in a special housing unit at the hospital. The number of patients riding the trolley changes, depending on the patients, but usually 8-10 and staff. The Club has received a lot of positive feedback after each group rides. The staff has lots of "off property" trips, like the trolley rides, mini golf, hiking, fishing, etc. etc. They are without transportation, so these "field trips" are very important, as they are otherwise confined to their particular unit at the hospital. In fact, at the beginning of this year, we had a sign up sheet on the tables in January, and it was almost filled at that meeting. Rotarians are very supportive!
