The Colorado River compact will expire in 2026. This compact affects the citizens of 7 western states (AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, UT, WY). We have Rotary clubs in all of the affected areas. The purpose of this grant is to develop a Rotary program that will educate Rotarians on the importance of this compact and why they as business and community leaders should become involved. There are over 24,000 Rotarians in the 7 State compact area. The video will introduce the history, importance and how to become involved. The Center of the American West (Univ of CO) will provide a cadre of experts for Q&A after the video. We will ask Rotarians to get involved by: (1) contacting their state water commissioner, (2) asking for their plan on how to provide water to their community, (3) encouraging their local counties involvement by developing a Water Adequacy plan for their community. The video will be seen by over 10,000 Rotarians. The involvement of these Rotarians through the follow-up action will involve over a 1,000 Rotarians that will invest on average 5 to 10 hours. This will result in over 5,000 to 10,000 Rotarian hours of volunteer service to their community in the 7 state area.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
The budget has been revised to show this as an 18 month project. The first 6 months is the development of the video and expert resource panel to answer questions when the video is distributed. The next 12 months is the implementation of the project. This will involve distribution of the video and having water experts available for Q&A after the video is shown by video conference. So, the video will be offered to the 1,300 Rotary clubs in the 7 state area. The 25 minute video will be followed by a video conference call provided by the Rotarian group with a water expert to answer any questions by the club. This interaction will provide real time answers to the questions by the club members.
The end result will be a much higher level of understanding by the Rotarians of the issues associated with the Colorado River compact and will also allow for local clubs to become involved in this ongoing process.
