Community Development: Construction/Renovation
Summary: renovated Picnic Shelter used by the community for various events
Settlers Cove State Park, a well used community park, had a picnic shelter on the beach. The old picnic shelter had to be torn down last summer/fall due to significant rot and undercutting erosion. A new location further down the beach, more protected, has been proposed, but with limited state funding towards parks, new shelter construction has been postponed. Local park staff and the Park Superintendent located in Juneau supports Ketchikan First City Rotary's effort to fund and construct a new shelter. They will commit to providing a staff person to assist in construction and design of a new shelter. AK State Parks will provide all the future maintenance of the new shelter.
The community need for a Picnic shelter will allow for a dry place for enhanced recreational experiences for residents and visitors. There have been numerous weddings, family picnics, High School, family and teacher reunions, educational programs for students including: beach study days, park natural history programs, and sporting events. Our club members will be directly involved in the project including: securing construction material, designing the structure, upland stabilization, and building the shelter. Half of the project funds will come from our annual "duck race" fundraiser in July with all labor for the construction of the picnic shelter provided by the local club.

We have ordered and received all construction material for the project. We have partnered with the sierra club to move all material down to the construction site. We have dug footing holds for the large beams and have filled them with cement. Next, we will insert the large beams that support the picnic shelter roof into the cement holes.
