his project will help to fund the 2022 HEB Reads! Summer Reading Kickoff, which will be held at Pennington Field, Bedford, Texas, on May 14, 2022. The Kickoff is a completely free community festival with an attendance of over 4,000. Schools, libraries, community organizations, and local businesses come together to celebrate and promote reading. This will encourage reading to combat the "summer slide". Teachers will not have to spend as much time in the fall re-teaching skills lost over the summer. Many families in the HEB communities are not aware of the importance of summer reading. HEB-ISD is a diverse population both in its racial and ethnic makeup and socioeconomic levels. Over 70 languages are spoken in HEB-ISD with 54.9% in the free lunch program. Reading is encouraged through prizes and incentives, including another free book when a certain number of minutes is achieved. Project funds will be used for book giveaways and tote bags. The tote-bags will be used for the free book and to collect information and items being offered by groups having festival booths. The bag will be branded with the Rotary logo. Rotary members will fill a variety of rolls-welcoming people at the gate to the Kickoff and distribute tote bags to each attendee.
