Project Description

Location: Mineral Wells

Total Budget: $4,200

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development, The environment

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Assistance with newly established community garden, 'Let's Grow Crazy' in the heart of downtown Mineral Wells. Building raised beds for the education of area students, teachers, and community members in Palo Pinto County.

Organization's summary: Let's Grow Crazy started supporting the Palo Pinto County, Texas local food network in March of 2021 by building green garden spaces for community members, families and individuals to come learn, grow and socialize. They believe that connecting people to where their food comes from will have positive, generational health impacts in our community. They emphasize the importance of empowering and developing health and agriculture leaders so they have included schools, educators and children in the designing of our gardens and events to ensure these spaces will be for students of all ages and abilities to gain hands-on, educational experiences.

Project description: The Mineral Wells Rotary Club will assist Let's Grow Crazy with the development of educational raised beds which will be the very first community garden in the heart of downtown. The community garden section will have 3 feet tall raised garden beds, each with their own spigot, and will be available to schools and community members starting in Spring of 2022. This section will include a tool shed, shade trees and flowers, and a small gathering space with tables and chairs. The education features in the community garden section will be plant ID markers, sensory stations, and opportunities for intergenerational learning.

Rotary member engagement: Rotary members will support Let's Grow Crazy by providing lawn maintenance (or beautifying the garden, or ~5 service hours) before the third weekend of the month.

Budget overview: Rotary Clubs financial support will provide the materials needed to build and fill 10 garden beds and plant the gardens' very first shade trees to gather under.
