Total Budget: $5,900

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: Deliver food, water filters, solar lights and supplies to victims of August 2021 earthquake in Haiti

On August 14, 2021 Haiti was rocked by a massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake and 2,246 people died.

Haiti is located in Rotary District 7020. That District's Earthquake Response Committee assessed the damage and requested the following: drinking water, tents and tarps, food, hygiene kits, medicine, portable water containers, first aid kits; kitchen kits, and buckets.

District 7230's International Service Committee (Amir Asadi, Chair) has been working with Clubs in the District to secure donations to purchase these items and send them to needy families in Haiti.

To date, seven Clubs have pledged $3,400: White Plains ($1,000), The Bronx ($700), Peekskill ($500), Pleasantville ($500), Briarcliff Manor ($250), Yonkers-East Yonkers ($250) Westchester ($200).

The Committee intends to seek additional donations from other Clubs in the District until the end of October, complete the purchasing of all supplies by November 15th and send all supplies to Haiti by November 30th.

Once the supplies arrive in Haiti, Rotarian Jim Kushner (Inwood Rotary Club) will be "on the ground" to work with local contacts provided by Fr. Philippe Charles (Rotary Club of Yonkers) to direct the supplies to the families in need and to photograph the project.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The distribution of the supplies and items procured by this District Grant will be supervised by the Local churches in Hiati: Saint Louis King of France Cathedral. (Diocese of Jérémie, Roman Catholic Church), Father Philippe has introduced us to His Grace, Bishop Joseph Gontrand Decoste and Father Louis Mérosné from the Diocese of Nippes in Haiti. We will coordinate with them for the distribution appropriate people and areas. We'll work on getting photos and documentation of the distribution efforts.
