Health: General
Summary: Provide funding to aide Homeless Pregnant Women's Shelter with food, baby clothing, and other necessities in Staten Island New York.
The Mid-Island Rotary of Staten Island would like to provide funding in the form of baby clothing, food, and other necessary supplies to "The Good Council" organization whom provides shelter to eight homeless pregnant women and women with small children under five years of age who have nowhere else to turn. The shelter helps these homeless mothers and their young children through various programs which includes education on child rearing and care, literacy, nutrition, preparing for job interviews & career placement, social skills, financial budgeting, and more. Rotarians can volunteer and share their expertise in these areas and other pertinent fields; or help through providing baby/children's clothing, baby/child supplies (for example: pampers, bibs, blankets, baby food, formula, etc.) and/or clothing for the mothers. Household items are also appreciated for those women who are lucky enough to find a permanent home. Assistance with childcare is also a major needed. This project request and funding provided will be able to help meet the emergent needs of these women and their children through the funds and items gathered (food and clothing for the children) and volunteers to help provide education in some of the areas mentioned above: financial budgeting, nutrition, job interview skills. This project is open for the next 180-days.

The Mid-Island Rotary has made the Good Counsel Homeless Pregnant Women’s shelter one of our priorities to assist this fiscal year. Thus far, during the recent holiday season, we’ve donated previously loved items in excellent condition to the shelter such as baby clothing and a child’s high chair.

Mid-Island Rotary of Staten Island purchased individual pillows and towel sets for each woman in varying colors to allow them to match their bed linen or their personal preference; again, providing them with varying colors to help the ladies feel empowered with new items of their very own they can keep. Please check out some of the pictures provided to see items purchased.

We purchase ten sets, one for each current resident and one for the incoming resident. Each linen set varies in style to allow each woman at the shelter to choose the set which matches her own personality. It was our hope that this would help increase the women’s self-esteem. These bed linens will belong exclusively to each individual and she can take it with her once she leaves the shelter for permanent housing.

We worked with the organization and obtained children’s sizes and needs and purchased clothing appropriate for each child according to their size. On April 27, we made an additional donation of bed linen specifically geared toward the children’s beds and cribs and clothing for the children. We also purchased baby monitors and soothing sound gadgets to help mother’s sooth their children. These specific gifts were placed in gift baskets addressed to each child. The baskets were then able to be used as “laundry baskets.” Please review the various pictures we’ve shared to show the gifts. Again, these gifts were geared specifically toward the needs of each child as the children varied from newborns to four years of age and a set of twins.

Throughout the grant period, the Mid-Island Rotary continuously gathered items that were previously loved, yet in excellent condition, and provided the shelter with these items to giveaway. Additional items were donated such as purses for the mothers, writing materials, activity books for the mothers and some toys for the children. Several of the purses were large enough to serve as diaper bags. And a couple were new high-end purchases.
