Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Staten Island, NY

Total Budget: $5,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: Volunteer Services

Summary: Food and toiletries for the poor, homeless and veterans on Staten Island, NY

NEEDS:

Food, you can't live without it but for some they can't afford it, even on Staten Island which is considered prosperous.

BACKGROUND:

There are 42 food pantries servicing many of the less fortunate on Staten Island, yet many still fall through the cracks. Reasons vary from too proud, unable to travel to the pantries, mentally-affected, unaware of the pantries, afraid [because of being undocumented], etc. Also, kids in crisis will be addressed. Kids age out of foster care at age 21, and sadly, Staten Island knows of adolescents living on the streets.

Some food pantries too are struggling with securing supplies to distribute.

PROJECT EXPENDITURES:

The South Shore Rotary Club proposes to establish a food distribution program on Staten Island. Along with our $2500 we are requesting $2500 from the District to enhance our effort for the Island that have in excess of 400,000 inhabitants.

THE PROCESS:

Specifically, we plan to contact local food vendors as well as online vendors to get the best possible price for the food. The biweekly food delivery will consist of produce, toiletries, canned and boxed food. Orders will be tailored to the receiving organization's needs.

We will work closely with community service organizations such as drug rehab facilities, homeless outreach programs, struggling veterans as well as a select few struggling food pantries who will be the recipients of the food and toiletry needs.

INVOLVEMENT OF CLUB MEMBERS:

We believe that the success of any project rides on the follow through. Our goal is to achieve at least 90 hours of South Shore Rotarian service by the end of May 2022.

THE PROCESS

Will consist of:

• Selecting the recipients

• Selecting the source of the food

• Placing and receiving the order

• Separating the delivery into individual loads

• Delivering the food
