Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Calexico

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: Calexico Rotary Club providing assistance with gas, food, and lodging for indigent community members who require out of county medical treatment.

The Calexico Rotary Club has reached out to Community Based Organizations (CB0) to identify needs relating to the cost of specialized medical treatment outside of Imperial County for indigent families. The Calexico Rotary club is located in Imperial County. Imperial County has a large segment of the population who is indigent and are under served. Calexico, and Imperial County in general, have very high rates of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, asthma and obesity. Medical treatment in Imperial County is limited for residents seeking specialized medical treatment. As such, many of our sick residents are required to attend specialized medical treatment in surrounding counties, such as, San Diego and Riverside. The cost of traveling for indigent families who are already facing economic challenges is an extreme hardship. Accordingly, the Calexico Rotary Club has partnered with two community based organizations, Amigos de Alejandro and The Cancer Research Center of the Desert in an effort to try to alleviate this situation. The Calexico Rotary Club will provide assistance for transportation, meal, and lodging for indigent families who are required to travel out of county for specialized medical treatment. The timeline for the project will be until the end of the June of 2022. Rotary members will be involved by coordinating with the CBOs and oversee how the funds are spent. In sum, the goal of our club is to facilitate medical treatment for families who cannot afford the costs associated with traveling out of county for specialized treatment.

We made a contribution of $1000 to the Cancer Resource Center of the Desert. We received notification that all $1000 were used for cancer patients who live in Calexico and who are receiving out of county cancer treatment, which includes transportation, food, and lodging for 30 cancer patients.

We also made a donation to Amigos de Alejandro in Calexico. As of this date they have spent $3485 of the $5000 donated to this organization on gas and meals for out of county travel for cancer treatment.
