Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego

Total Budget: $1,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: Rotarians, Rotaractors, and other members of the San Diego community assemble Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPIs) to be sent to refugees in Africa and in Oaxaca, Mexico (specific location to be decided upon).

In much of East Africa water sources are unsafe to drink and must be heated in order to kill disease-causing bacteria. Individuals generally heat their water to its boiling point (212°F), a visual indicator that ensures the water is safe to drink. However the pasteurization point of water is much lower than boiling point, at 149°F. This means individuals unnecessarily waste valuable resources when bringing their water to a full boil before drinking. WAPIs are equipped with a wax that visually indicates water's pasteurization temperature so that individuals do not have to unnecessarily bring their water all the way to a boil in order to know their water is safe to drink. The WAPI Project 2022 will provide WAPIs to individuals in East Africa and Mexico who have limited resources and unsafe water sources. The event itself will be held sometime in in February or possibly March due to the still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the completed WAPIs will be sent to East Africa and Mexico within two months of the event.

Because we have held this event several times before, we will reuse most of the equipment purchased in past years. Additionally, if the event is in-person, we will receive funding from UCSD for the room and food for the event. Our funds will therefore be used to purchase the necessary materials to make the WAPIs themselves and for shipping costs necessary to send the completed WAPIs to East Africa and Mexico. All members who attend the event assemble the WAPIs and interested club members receive training and instruct others on WAPI-assembly during the event.
