Project Description Country: Chile Location: Santiago Total Budget: $6,088 Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention Activity Type: Peace: General Summary: Study Chilean human rights and natural resource law in Santiago, Chile to better indigenous involvement in development The Chilean Constitutional Convention elections in May 2021 provided an opportunity for innovative collaboration between indigenous groups in Chile and international development investors, thereby reducing long-standing conflicts between the two. Elizabeth Stephani, a 3rd year law student at the University of Wyoming, proposes to take a course January 2022 in Comparative Law in Action at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Santiago covering topics of Human Rights Law in Chile and case studies of natural resource conflicts in South America. Engaging with Chilean scholars, local Rotarian's and students will provide insights to propose a constitutional amendment that would balance multi-national corporate interests in Chile with indigenous rights to natural resources. Specifically she aims to integrate traditional knowledge of Mapuche people into the Chilean constitution to promote peace and sustainable development. Duration of the project December 27, 2021 to January 17, 2022. Grant funds will cover program tuition and travel. Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed) The Comparative Law course did not take place due to Covid restrictions. Subsequently an Independent Study Course during spring 2022 with the Univ of WY College of Law gathered research relative to local environmental conflicts in Chile. Stephani will now conduct field research in the Patagonia region in August 2022, collecting data on hydroelectric development impact for native people groups along the Biobio river. The project will also engage with Chilean scholars and students at the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Santiago, Chile. Gathering local perspectives, she will study environmental conflicts specific to Chile to gain insight in understanding the dynamic between multi-national corporate interest and indigenous groups in the region. Consequently solutions that promote peace between stakeholders will be proposed.
