Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Lemont, IL

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Develop and plant Pollination Garden in conjunction with Lemont Park District.

Rotary of Lemont-Homer Glen will partner with Lemont Park District to develop, plant and maintain a Pollination Garden on Lemont Park District land. The Pollination Garden will be planted with local plant species that promote the preservation of pollinators in the area. The garden will provide a respite for residents and will help beautify the neighborhood it will be planted in. Steps of the project include, determination of the site, choice and purchase of plantings, preparation and planting, purchase of a sign to designate as a Rotary project, maintenance of the garden once it is planted and promotion of the project. This project falls under the broad scope of Community Economic Development but also falls under the scope of the new Area of Focus of Environmental Preservation. It is cooperative project and fits the District Partnership with Operation Pollination.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

4/3/22 Update: This development of the new downtown Lemont park is delayed and will not be completed in 2022. This will delay the partnership project with the Village of Lemont to plant a pollinator garden in the newly developed downtown park.

The project is revised as follows:

Rotary of Lemont Homer Glen is partnering with The Forge, a private/public partnership organization in Lemont that is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and recreational use of the Lemont Quarries and the adjacent I&M Canal Corridor. The grant funds will sponsor an educational and seeding and planting event with The Forge. The event will be held on April 23 (educational portion) and May 4 (planting portion). Rotarian Mark Pawlak will provide a seminar on beekeeping at the April 23 event. Rotary will provide funding ($500 from our club and $411 from our grant) to purchase seedling and plants for the seeding and planting event that will be held on May 4. Rotary members will work alongside The Forge and other community volunteers to plant seedling trees and pollinator plants in the grounds surrounding the Lemont Quarries and along the I&M Canal Corridor adjacent to the Quarries.

This change falls in line with the original intent of our grant. We will be providing pollinator plants and trees in the Lemont area as originally planned. Instead of partnering with the Park District our partnership will be with The Forge. Rotary Club members volunteer regularly with The Forge in area clean up events and we use the venue for special events, so this is a good partnership.

The planned Park District park has delayed development due to zoning issues and delays pertaining to COVID 19. Planned development is delayed until spring 2023. We are requesting that the funds be held over until this project begins. Our pollinator garden is an integral part of the park development. If the funds need to be used in 2021-2022 we would request permission to change the project to support The Forge Earth Day project. This project includes clean up efforts and planting of indigenous plantings and seedlings along the I&M Canal. Our club is supporting this project financially and is participating with volunteers. Please let us know if either of these changes to our project are possible.
