Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chicago

Total Budget: $16,000

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Teaching art to 3rd grade students from CPS, exposing them at the Smart Art Museum at U of Chicago , as a way to cope with conflict.

Chicago Financial District would like to pursue this project. We are dependent on CPS being in person and them allowing us to

follow through with this project.

Smart Art includes the involvement of The Smart Art Museum at U. of Chicago, CPS and the Chicago Financial District Rotary Club. Third grade student attend the Smart Museum twice; once at the beginning of their instruction and the other at the end. They receive eight classes about art at their schools. The goal is to teach them how to use art to deal with conflict. Rotarians (approximately 10) help in the classroom and at the Smart Art Museum. We would like to have 200 students involved in the program. These are student that lost art instruction in their inner city schools.

Project funds will be used to pay instructors, transportation to the Smart Art Museum to and from school, and reimburse the museum for supplies used.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Due to the pandemic, the club was not able to meet with the students this year. Instead, they will do an Art Bags project for the Smart Art Program. Club members will put together 43 Art Bags to give to the Smart Art Museum to distribute to the less fortunate students. -- Rachel Ossyra, DRFC, 3/23/22
