Project Description

Country: Uganda

Location: Gulu

Total Budget: $3,205

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: Purchase & Installation of 14 Latrines

Solana Beach Eco Rotary Club (ECO) is hosting a Sanitation Project created to build and equip latrines & a wash room for a school called the Garden Of Knowledge Primary School in Gulu, Uganda.

The project involves an infrastructure update that will generate more water from an existing well, pump that water to a holding tank for storage and distribution., the purchase and installation of the latrine hardware and plumbing. Currently the school staff and hundreds of students use a simple outdoor pit latrine of dirt and a hole in the ground with steel sheeting for walls and have no washing facilities (photo attached.) Completion the project will provide fourteen flushable latrines (7 for boys & 7 for girls) and a wash room with showers.

The current well needs to be drilled deeper to produce more flow. It has been verified that it it can produce the amount needed. Plumbing to the building is included. A solar powered water pump will pump the water from the well to the building. Water will be collected in a storage tank (also included) and will be used for toilets and showering/washing.

The project will be co-managed by the Kampala Ssese Islands Rotary Club (#28084) District 9211, in Kampala Uganda. it is the home club of the school principal/founder Komakech Charles. All materials and labor labor/installation of the various components are listed as attachmets. Budgeted amounts proposed for each are based on actual estimates by qualified suppliers.

Construction of the building to house the latrines and showers as well as a building with a solid stand of steel and brick to support the water storage tank, will be built by the school and is not part of the cost of the project.

Education materials on proper hygiene and the importance of hand washing will be attached to each latrine privacy enclosure (see left photo bottom sign). Also, group training seminars will be conducted to give instructions to students and teachers on the use and maintenance of the new flushable latrines. Good sanitation is essential for health and well being. "Pit Latrines" are currently used for elimination of body waste, but hand washing is done with a basin of water, which tends to spread germs from one person to another. The result is the contamination of streams and soils, the spread of disease, high rates of infant and young child mortality, and heavy caseloads of diarrhea and other infections.
