Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development
Summary: Five thousand dollars to help defray the cost of the Nikolaevsk School Class of 2022 senior trip to Japan in April of 2022.
The Nikolaevsk School Class of 2022 consists of five students who have attended school together in the K-12 school of the rural Russian Orthodox village of Nikolaevsk, Alaska, outside of Anchor Point and just north of Homer, since they were in kindergarten. Their shared interests in anime, commercial fishing, international issues and Japanese culture decided their destination. They reached out to the Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay because of the educational nature of the trip and its implications to commercial fishing practices and international relations - covering three of Rotary Foundation's areas of focus: peace building and conflict resolution; basic education; and community economic development. While there's no doubt the students will benefit profoundly from the trip by broadening their perspective on the world, gaining knowledge of international fishing practices and experiencing a taste of multiculturalism that their rural Alaska village cannot provide, the entire community also stands to gain from the students' exposure to a different way of life. For our club, it provides a valuable link to an under-represented portion of our community in Rotary. While the students are fund-raising for the trip, several difficult fishing years and the pandemic have made this task more daunting. Because Rotary youth programs have been scaled back during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project seems to be an ideal way to support young people who are connecting with Rotary's areas of focus in unique and independent ways. The students have the support of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.
