In addition to our annual Josh The Otter water safety / literacy project, we are adding an interpretive trail to promote water safety at the trail head of the Recently completed Rotary Pavilion at the Little Su River in Houston. Previously we identified the area where the Pavilion was build as a safety hazard due to the nature of the riverbank in this area, we have encountered numerous capsizes, endangering volunteers. The improvements in this area will increase day use and increase water activities however there is no water safety interpretive site. We will construct a Kid's Don't Float/Life Jacket Loaner Board at the Pavilion Trailhead designed to provide a safe place out of the weather to house life jackets, Josh the Otter Safety material. The interpretive trail signage will promote water safety and local history and information and perhaps designated resting areas.
The area we would like to clear is approximately 1325 ft. long and 6 ft. wide. We would like to remove the remaining trees, overburden, and 4-6 inches of base material for new trail. The majority of the trees that we have already fallen can be cut up for firewood and used by the local Houston Community residents. We expect to cut the remaining trees into firewood and make it available to folks that need it as proven successful from the first batch. The rest of the clean fill, including stumps can be buried and used to bring up the grade in low spots if needed on the same parcel.
We would rent a Track loader to assist in grading and grubbing, hauling & packing trail material there are many options available, but average rental rates are $355/ day and $2000/ week.
In addition to the $2000 Track Loader rental expense, we should expect to buy fuel at 2 gals / hour for an estimated 100 gals of diesel at $4.00/gal.
4 - 6 inches of Subbase and surface material at approximately $7,500.00 Grading and spreading of materials will be completed by Susitna Rotary and Friends under direction of third party entity.
Our plan is to construct and supply a weather protected Kid's Don't Float/Life Jacket Kiosk at the trail head for $750 and an additional 3 Trail signs with weather proof stands for $250 each totaling $1,500.00 for signage.
We are in contact with a third party for permitting and planning at an estimates cost of $3000 - $6,500 depending on permitting requirements.
Total Projected Cost : $17,900. $8,900.00 in District 5010 funding, $8,900.00 in Rotary Club of Susitna Funding
