Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise Idaho

Total Budget: $19,800

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: To share life skills and build the self-confidence of 75 low-income students in Boise, Idaho to inspire them to graduate and secure degrees and professional certifications

This grant would enable the implementation of Everyday Leadership at three Title I, low-income schools (Garfield, Whitney, and Koelsch) within the Boise School District. Approximately 75 students would benefit.

The program is designed to increase the odds that that low-income youth will succeed scholastically and professionally by equipping them with life skills (leadership, teamwork, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, and decision making) and building their self-confidence.

This is a collaborative effort uniting the resources of (1) school teachers and principals, (2) Treasure Valley YMCA instructors, (3) Boise School District Directors, (4) BIGS from Big Brothers Big Sisters, and (5) Rotarians from Rotary Clubs of Boise Metro and Boise Sunrise.

The grant would be used to provide school teachers and YMCA instructors to lead 13 leadership classes and two community service projects. The funds would also enable to the students to attend a three-day leadership camp.

Rotarians play a central role in organizing, facilitating and funding the project. During the school year, about 20 Rotarians meet with the students to discuss what they are learning and how they are using their new insights. Rotarians serve as cabins monitors and assist in conducting leadership exercises at the camp. They provide logistical and transportation assistance throughout the year.

The program has been very successful. Grades have increased, behavioral problems have decreased, and many of the participants have gone on to accelerated learning programs in junior high school.

The Rotary Foundation approved the District Block Grant on July 23. Your project is approved. Having more money available than requested, the committee is increasing the DDF for your project. Your financing has been edited to $5,000 of DDF for both clubs. Signatures have been canceled. You may reduce your club amounts or keep them the same. Then send again for signatures. Changes will be reviewed by the committee before final approval and notification of award. If you have any questions, please contact Ines Crespo at (208) 320-8494 or ines@glassinbalance.com.
