Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley/Evans, Colorado

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: The purpose of this project is to provide emergency cold weather supplies to the homeless and their pets in the Greeley and Evans communities.

COVID-19 has contributed to an increase in homelessness in our local communities as well as our communities' ability to respond to the needs of those impacted by homelessness. In collaborating with our local cold-weather homeless shelter, many homeless seek companionship and safety and fulfill that need with a pet, often a dog. However, our local shelters are not equipped to serve those with pets. Most homeless are not willing to part with their pets, even temporarily placing them in a kennel, and most dogs of the homeless are not accustomed to being kenneled or being separated from their owners. To help bridge this gap in services, this project seeks to provide the homeless with pets in our local area with emergency supplies to help them sustain through the cold weather months. These grant dollars would be utilized almost immediately to provide additional supplies to be distributed through our local cold-weather shelter. Funds will be used to purchase food, temporary shelter, and warm clothes and blankets for the homeless and their pets. Please see the attached budget for more details.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Rotary participation: members of the World Community Service committee will work directly with our local cold weather shelter with the physical distribution of supplies. Part of this work will include getting to know the stories of the homeless so that our efforts to support them will honor their voice and needs.

Our club is approximately 2/3 complete with the distribution of supplies for this grant. We have made good inroads with our community cold-weather shelter and housing navigation center to identify people whose needs match that of the grant. We have been individualizing support on a case-by-case basis.

Quarterly Update: This project has been quite successful and has helped our club to build better relationships and better understand issues of homeless in the Greeley/Evans communities. We will be wrapping up our remaining spending this spring and closing out the grant in the coming month.
