Project Description

Country: USA

Location: LaJollaCoastalWalk Trail

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Urgent Environmental Sustainment erosion control repairs to the LaJolla Coastal Walk Trail

This project aligns with the new Rotary International Environmental Sustainability area of service, and has been coordinated with the District 5340 Environmental Sustainability Committee. Additionally, this project directly supports downtown LaJolla economic development. The Coastal Walk Trail is .6 miles in length. It is located on the cliffs directly above the pacific ocean and 1 block from downtown LaJolla. The natural trail is a popular attraction for out of owners and local residents. Many visitors walk the trail then enjoy the many shops in downtown LaJolla.

2020 5340 District funds are requested due to the urgent requirement of this environmental project

The project is erosion repair / control, and this project must be completed before the winter rain, wind and storms arrive. The Coastal Walk Trail is located on the cliff immediately above the Pacific Ocean and is exposed to the harsh marine environment. Delaying the project into next year will probably damage the Coast Walk Trail past the Safe to Travel point, risks closing the trail, and will dramatically increase cost and scope of the project.

This shovel ready environmental sustainment project has city permits, project plans and contractor agreement.

The project involves anchoring and installing an environmentally safe Envirogrid Geocell retaining wall. Once the geocell has been anchored and backfilled, native plants and seeds will be placed on top of the newly built slope to create a root system in order to sustain the cliff and mitigate future erosion.

La Jolla Sunrise Rotary has embraced supporting this historic trail and will continue to support thru fundraisers, administrative support and actively coordinate community support.

Additionally, the project has received $6,000.00 matching funds from Friends of Coastal Walk Trail.
