The San Marcos Unified School District has six Title 1 schools, those with a student base where at least 40% come from low-income families. The Rotary Club of San Marcos helps to address this and promote literacy by spending time reading to children. The Club will use the funds to purchase a book for each first grade student and if any, also first/second grade student combo classes. The book title is selected with assistance from the San Marcos Unified School District.
Project chair orders the books and upon receiving delivery, club members gather and paste Rotary Club of San Marcos stickers inside each book. Teams of two Rotarians visit each classroom*, tell the students about Rotary and read the book to them. This book is then distributed to each student to keep and for many, this is the first new book they have ever had!
The Literacy Project is planned to take place in Spring 2021.
*If we are not allowed to visit the classrooms in person due to COVID, our alternate goal is to read to the students through a recorded message or Zoom-type platform and deliver the books to the schools for staff disbursement.
