Orange County's Housing market creates a huge gap between rentals costs and median family income. Homelessness in OC due to job loss, divorce, abuse or medical crisis creates a large number of families with children that have to face this temporary crisis. Home Aid's Family Center provides temporary residential housing for such families some of them with infants.
Our project provides some meals to these families / individuals during their stay in this temporary housing facility. We will also supplement that with annual diaper drives and reading to the children when possible. The facility typically houses about 50-60 families and on a rotation basis up to 500-600 families a year.
Meal service will include food purchase / preparation, delivery and service if possible with the help of Rotarians. We expect at least 10 Rotarians and other volunteers to participate in each meal service. Our project envisages a modest 5-6 meal services during the year.
Funds will be used to purchase the food and all the supplies to facilitate the meal service. We expect meal costs around $8 per/ person and use the funds to provide a days meal service every other month for up to 60 families.
We believe we will serve families that are working their way back out of being homeless and more importantly creating a greater awareness of the homelessness challenge in OC among Rotarians and others to be able to mitigate this in the future.
