Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Oak Park and Cicero, IL

Total Budget: $4,614

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Community economic development

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: The Rotary Club of Oak-Park River Forest proposes to use our 2020-21 District grant of $4614 to address hunger in our community and surrounding communites.

Even before the current COVID-19 virus pandemic, our area food pantries, Beyond Hunger in Oak Park and Catholic Charities in Cicero (which primarily serves residents of Cicero, Berwyn, Oak Park and Maywood) were serving a combined total exceeding 10,000 households annually. In the past 10 weeks, these vital social service agencies have seen their numbers more than triple, as they try to serve those who have now lost employment due to the current economic crisis. Our local food pantries reprot that they have been forced to reduce the amount of food provided to each client, giving them far less than they require to feed their families. Both food pantries are in need of additional funds to restock their shelves with non-perishable items. Our financial donation can be leveraged almost fourfold by the food pantries, as they are able to purchase these items in bulk directly from the food distributors. Our club donated $2000 in unused meal money to Beyond Hunger in April 2020 and intends to give $2307 in funding from District grant to each food pantry for a total of $4614.
