Project Description

Country: Nepal

Location: Sulibhanjag, Golanjor

Total Budget: $9,000

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: Continuing rebuild of the classroom damaged in the 2015 earthquakes. Block A classrooms were rebuild with a 2019-2020 grant. This 2020-2021 project will rebuild Block B secondary school classrooms.

This project will rebuild the Lower Secondary block of Shree Bal Secondary School damaged by the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal using materials supplied by the grant. With a 2019-20 grant by Fort Collins RC After Work, four classrooms in "Block A" are currently under construction. The current request for $9,000 is to initiate rebuilding of three classrooms in "Block B", as well as provide exercise books for the students entering these classrooms. On site management will be by our Rotarian and Rotaract partners in Nepal. The villagers and families who have children attending the school will provide the labor for reconstruction. These are low-income people who need assistance with materials but are eager to provide labor.

The Shree Bal government secondary school is located in Sulibhanjag, Golanjor a rural municipality in Nepal. There are 340 students in this school with grades from kindergarten through tenth. Due to the earthquakes two blocks (Block A with four classrooms and Block B with three classrooms) have structural problems with the floors and roof. We are now seeking support to rebuild Block B classrooms. The old roof and its support system were cracked as a result of the earthquake and during the rainy season water enters these classrooms. This disturbs students and teachers alike, and is especially dangerous due to cracks in the roof. The families of the students and villagers are requesting assistance for repair of the floors and to change the roof support beams and metal roof sheeting. As in the past, these projects begin after the rainy season has ended (Aug. - Sept.), and are typically finished within 4-6 months (weather and logistic dependent).

Children attending this school are from very poor backgrounds. Past school records indicate that 6.5% of students drop out due to a lack of learning materials (exercise books, pencils, etc.), all of who are girls. Thus we are planning to supply learning materials to support the continued study of all students for one year after the rebuild has been completed. This is a departure from past budgets, but is expected to enhance sustainability goal of the education and literacy project.
