Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Utqiagvik, Alaska

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Students in the North Slope score below the Alaska state stardand, so we want to partner with the local school district to implement the Leader in Me program so that students can take ownership of their learning by becoming a leader.

More than 60% of students that graduate from the Northslope Borough School District stay in their respective communities. Many of these students score below the state averages for reading and math. Research has shown that students can increase their academic achievement when they take ownership or leadership of their own learning. The Barrow Nuvuk Club would like to partner with the local middle school to help them implement the Leader in Me (LIM) program. This program is developed to teach educators how to infuse the habits of highly effective people into their culture so that students are learning the skills to be successful in their individual lives, their families, and their community.

Implementation Time Line:

August/Sept.-Students will be assessed using the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) in reading and math, and students will be given a questionnaire on how they see themselves as leaders.

October 12-Leader in Me Training for Hopson Middle School Teachers. Rotarians will assist in the training. Funds will be used to pay for this leadership training for teachers (5,000)

October-May: Teachers will implement the Leader in Me Program through the use of Leadership Notebooks. Students will develop accountabilities systems for their goals, action plans, leadership roles, celebrations, and assessment of their goals.

October-May: Rotarians will be involved in visiting Wed. morning schoolwide assemblies where leadership opportunities will be displayed.

December and April: Students take MAPs assessment. Academic progress throughout the year will be examined.

May-Students take the leadership questionnaire. Student self-reflection on leadership will be examined.

May-Followup on Rotary Grant reporting. The results of the project will be reported as a presentation to the Rotary Club. A Presentation will be done with the district with the goal of further funding.
