Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Alaska

Total Budget: $24,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Health: Volunteer Services

Summary: Provide Back Packs and Duffle Bags to foster children and other services to Alaska Foster families throughout the state

Rotary Cares for Kids (RC4K) is a 5010 District Wide Service Project which is in its third year of providing backpacks and duffle bags and other services for foster children and other disadvantaged children in Alaska. To date over 1000 duffle bags and 500 backpacks have been distributed. Rotarians are involved in packing the back packs with toiletries and comfort items and coordinating the distribution. RC4K has also functioned as a clearing house for projects that benefitted foster/disadvantaged kids that are initiated by the District steering committee but worked best by local clubs. These latter projects have included distributing gift cards; building fences (3) for foster families that don't have the capability to build them; organizing Christmas parties. One of the unique aspects of this project it is District wide and involves all 38 clubs in 5010. Because of the highly successful record of RC4K, the steering committee wants to take advantage of the contacts we have developed and the synergistic power of the local clubs to expand the mission of the committee. Using the branding of "Rotary Cares for Kids" we now want to reach out to all of the clubs in the District and ensure they are aware of local needs precipitated by Covid 19. Thus with funding provided by this DDF Grant, local clubs throughout the District can quickly respond to emergent needs and solutions that would (1) benefit the local community, (2) involve children who have or will be adversely affected if not done and (3) the situation was created by the pain and suffering of the Covid 19 pandemic. The project is an extension of a three year program which has been financed by District Grants, club support, and excess District reserves. Club members throughout the District will be responsible for the execution of the local aspects of the projects. The money will be spent in the target Rotary year but the project will continue indefinitely

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Our basic mission statement outlined above has not changed. But the project has been stymied by Covid 19 and the inability to have packing parties and efficient distribution of the backpacks. However, as the pandemic wanes, we are now ramping up to redouble our efforts In that regard, we have created a District Action Committee and had our first zoom meeting on March 16, 2021. This committee has drafted a strategic plan and organized our effort by the five geographical Rotary areas. Despite the obstacles with Covid 19 we have clubs in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Homer, Juneau who have distributed backpacks and other clubs have provided goods and services to foster care agencies.
