D-1258    Burkina Faso - Zabre Burkina Faso Rural Well Water $54,566 The grant budget will be used to dig 3 or 4 boreholes, install casings, protective well-caps, and hand pumps in the community of Zabre, a village in southeastern Burkina Faso. Included in the project is creation of a community water board, collection of ongoing maintenance fees, training a local mechanic to make repairs when necessary, and instructing citizens on proper use of the pumps. Improving water resources is key to ameliorating the lives of the people in Burkina Faso for two principal reasons. First, ensuring access to potable water dramatically reduces the incidence of both diarrheal diseases and parasitic infections, both of which seriously burden families in Burkina Faso. Second, women in the targeted rural areas spend hours each day fetching water – sometimes walking several kilometers just to reach the nearest polluted well or lake. This takes time from potential income-generating activities, and restricts them to a life of labor. By increasing access to potable water, women cannot only improve the health of their families, but they can better participate in economic activities that they otherwise have little time for. Project listed for the 2008-09 Rotary Year. The Matching Grant application number from TRF is #69346. The costs have been verified by both the local Rotary Club and a former Peace Corp volunteer, assigned to the Community of Zabre in 2006 and 2007, the site of the pump implementations. Village water boards will be elected to oversee pump operation and insure proper maintenance (which is minimal) is performed. Each family using the pump will be required to contribute to a replenishment fund. Yearly assessments will keep the required minimums on-hand. It’s a technique successfully used by the Danish on many other projects. If unable to raise funds necessary for 4 wells, we can scale back to 3 wells at a total cost of $41,212.
