Project Description Region: Africa Country: Uganda Location: Jinja Total Budget: $61,000 Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development View Online Proposal Form Following a needs assessment in a number of primary schools in a remote LUUKA district in Eastern Uganda in collaboration with the District Education Officer and by interviewer administered pretested questionnaire it was discovered that there was a dire need for provision of basic water and sanitation facilities in form of wash rooms, pit latrines as well as water harvesting tanks in the majority of schools visited. Through use of the written questionnaires, four schools with a total population of 3,252 students, (an average of about 813 students per school) that were most needy were identified, the respective head teachers interviewed and on site visits were carried out in collaboration with our partners Haileybury Youth Trust (HYT). Onsite assessment included finding out how many structures were feasible in each particular school at a reasonable cost. According to the latest 2014 National census results, the district a mostly rural populated one has a population of 241,453, the majority 124,863 of whom are women. This is a joint project with the Rotaract club Source of the Nile. A "first flush system" that ensures that the first water coming off the roof (& bringing the bulk of dirt) does NOT make it into the tank, it is diverted into a down pipe ensuring a cleaner general standard of water in the tank.The entire latrines for boys and girls are separate. Memoranda of understanding shall be signed with the respective schools to ensure sustainability & security of the new facilities once the project is completed. The wider community will be provided access to the water via a separate external tap via clever plumbing techniques while ensuring that the bulk of access to the water will be retained by the schools.
