India is home to more than 77 million diabetics, earning the unfortunate title of the "Diabetes Capital of the World." A significant number of these individuals progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), requiring regular dialysis for survival. However, more than two-thirds of kidney patients in India die prematurely-not due to medical limitations, but because they cannot access or afford dialysis treatment.
This problem is particularly severe in Rotary District 3040, which covers Madhya Pradesh and parts of Gujarat. The region is predominantly rural, with a high percentage of underprivileged communities that lack basic healthcare infrastructure, particularly in nephrology services.
The Need--
---End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing rapidly.
---Rural and low-income patients cannot afford recurring dialysis costs.
---Public healthcare facilities are overburdened and under-equipped.
---Many lives are lost each year due to lack of timely dialysis access.
Project Objective--
To provide free and accessible dialysis treatment for economically disadvantaged patients across Central India through:
--Installation of 28 no.s of Dialysis Machines in selected hospitals and medical centers viz
----Peoples Hospital, Bhopal--10 machines
----All is Well Hospital, Burhanpur--6 no.s,
----Borle Hospital, Burhanpur--4 no.s
----Bhagwan Mahavir Swasthya Kendra, Daloda, Mandsaur --5 no.s
----Bhagodaya Tirth Hospital, Sagar--3 no.s
These hospitals have agreed that they will use this facility to offer a sustainable facility to the community at subsidised and in most deserving cases, it shall be on free of cost basis.
--Serving an estimated 30,000 patients annually - year after year.
--Reducing preventable deaths due to kidney failure in underserved regions.
This grants will ensure:
--Equitable distribution across multiple sites.
--Engagement with accredited hospitals and nephrology units.
--Long-term sustainability with hospital management assuming operational responsibilities.
Expected Impact
--30,000 dialysis sessions provided annually
--Thousands of lives saved each year
--Economic relief to low-income families burdened by medical costs
--Strengthening rural health infrastructure
--Demonstrating Rotary's commitment to health equity and humanitarian service
Monitoring and Evaluation
--Regular reporting as per Global Grant guidelines
--Hospital-based data tracking: patient count, sessions, outcomes
--Site visits and financial audits
--Impact assessment reports every 6-12 months
Sustainability--
The partnering hospitals will:
--Ensure staffing and medical oversight
--Maintain and service equipment
--Provide treatment to eligible patients free of charge
--Submit periodic updates to the host Rotary clubs
