Project Description

Region: North America

Country: México

Location: South Mexico

Total Budget: $220,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

In Mexico, the impact of COVID-19 continues growing as the days go by. Specialists have warned that until a vaccine is discovered, new waves of outbreaks and infections of the virus will continue affecting the population, especially the most vulnerable. Disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the development challenges, and has proven being able of disrupting the economic, political and social systems and has affected the development achievements in some sectors of the economy and society more than others. Among all the challenges, water security and compliance with the human right to water and sanitation have made visible the conditions of inequality of the population in the face of the impacts of the pandemic.

The provision of clean water, sanitation and hygiene to homes, especially at isolated communities, is an essential condition to protect human health from infectious diseases, including the COVID-19 outbreak. Ensuring good and consistent application of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) access and sustainable use practices in communities, homes, schools, markets, and health care (non-hospital) facilities will help to prevent transmission human to human of the COVID-19 virus and anothers.

Likewise, a closely linked concept is water security, defined as the ability of a population to safeguard at the basic level access to water in adequate quantities and with the appropriate quality to sustain the health of people and ecosystems, as well as to ensure effective protection of lives and property during water disasters such as floods, landslides, land subsidence, and droughts.

The timeline begins in february 2021 and ends june 2021.

This project is made in a jointventure with the United Nations Program from Development (UNPD). The UNPD has been researching all the poorest communities with water problems in the southeastern Mexico. Our main goals are to get 86 impact points in 100 communities for solving water and sanitation problems. Develop 86 points of impact in 100 communities, clear water for most 50,000 people and eradicate diseases associated with lack of water. The rotarians of District 4195 are going to be participating with the comminities and local authorities for getting these water problems solved. The investment of this grant will be add to the UNPD program.
