Having completed a Global Grant project to provide clean water to the two rural, adjacent communities of Cuajachillo 2 and Trinidad Central, community members identified the needs for nutritious food and work. Therefore, the Nicaraguan Agrarian University will collaborate with Rotarians to install tilapia fish tanks, from which waste water is fed by gravity into grow beds where plants thrive, like celery and mint. Their roots clean the water that is then pumped back into the fish tank. A family can produce 50 lbs of fish and vegetables every six months in their backyard for family consumption and sales of excess produce to provide income. The University agronomists and Nicaraguan Rotarians will provide training and expert follow-up with participants for six months. Each system costs approximately $700. This project will provide 57 families with an aquaponics system.
This project needs to receive some pledges to go to the next level. Please check the "Financing" tab to see the list of current pledges. Once the amount pledged is equal to the project budget, the status of the project will be automatically changed to "Fully Pledged". Click here to pledge support for this project.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
