Project Description

Region: Other

Country: India

Location: Salem

Total Budget: $33,509

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The babies delivered at GMKMCH is around 1000 every month and sick babies are transferred and cared for in this ward. Babies who do not have any health issues and are along with the mothers, are also visited and given counseling regarding new born baby care and breast feeding by the staff nurses and doctors from the new born ward. A Human milk bank "COMPREHENSIVE LACTATIONAL MANAGEMENT CENTRE" is also functional and is run by the new born care unit.

Around 450 new born babies in a month and 4,500 to 5000 new born babies in a year are taken care of in the new born unit of these 1500 to 1800 of them are premature, low birth weight babies that require intensive care. The primary problems these babies face are that they are not able to maintain their body temperature and their lungs are not yet mature to start breathing on their own.

There are 10 to 15 new born babies delivered to covid positive mothers at the new born covid ward at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical Hospital. These babies need to be kept in neonatal warmer beds so that they maintain warmth and all other treatment for them is provided in this warmer care units.

To support the weak, fragile new born babies breathing, Bubble Continous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Machine provide humidified oxygen from a central source, under positive pressure so that the babies lungs are kept inflated and this helps the baby to breath easily till the lung matures and becomes independently functional life saving medicines like surfactant and Caffiene along with these bubble CPAP have been helpful to these babies and sending the happy parents home along with their new small one.

Preterm ,low birth weight babies delivered to the covid positive mothers who need respiratory support require treatment with BubbleCPAP machines .4 Bubble CPAP machines will help to support these babies for non invasive ventilation

Our hospital has a Human Milk Bank and it is a prestigious project for our hospital. Annually we are collecting more than 1000 litres of human milk and more than 1000 babies are saved with this. For the collection of human milk we need electric breast pump.

To express breast milk from the covid positive mothers and to feed their babies 2 medela symphony breast pumps are required.
