Total Budget: $44,895

WHY THIS PROJECT / NEED FOR THE PROJECT

It has been observed that within the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where our club, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Nkporlu RSU is located, there has been a persistent of problems related to Sanitation hygiene, disease prevention and treatment. We have situations where there is population explosion due to the desire of the populace to improve on their educational level as a means of improving on their lives and carrier. An institution that before the 1990s was serving a population of maximum of 5,000 students now serves upwards of 35,000, which an increase of almost 15 times over the previous. The facilities provided are therefore overstretched and its now common site to see students and even staff urinating outside and wherever they are pressed. THIS SITUATION TO SAY THE LEAST IS DEHUMANISING. So the proposed project is in line with the Rotary Foundation goodwill of advancing world understanding through the improvement of health, as by the proposed project we aim at disease prevention through improved sanitation.

THE CLUB COMES TO HELP IN SOLVING PART OF THE IDENTIFIED NEEDS

We as a Club have looked at the situation and feel that we can provide additional units of toilet facilities to help the community solve part of these sanitation and disease prevention problems believing that we can have partnership to execute them.

The proposed project will consist of THREE units of the facility, where unit will consist of three oilets for each of males and females, a wash section and a cloak section for cleaners. Therefore the the proposed three units will provide a total of addition 18 toilet facilities to the university community. The Club has identified at lest 3 of the faculties that has the highest students/staff population of not less than 8000 so that the problem will not only be seen but show effectiveness in addressing the needs.

TIMELINE FOR THE PROJECT EXECUTION

Usually once a need is identified, and a project conceptualised to meet with the need, the next steps will be the planning and execution once the funds are avilable. The initial stages of this project has been achieved. This included the availability of land space, communication and reaching agreement with the immediate community for acceptance of the project. This has also been followed by the design of the project, sourcing the avilability of materials within the city for the execution of the project. This has led to the preparation of the Bill of Quantities for the entire project. This project will take a maximum of FOUR months to be completed.

USE OF THE PROJECT FUNDS

All the funds obtained for the exercise will be used in the execution of the project. This is the main reson the club has prepared the BOQ and hopes to abide with this. We therefore will assure all potential partners of our resolve to do just that. The estimated cost of each unit of the proposed facility is put at USD 14,965.00 and for the three proposed units, this will be USD 44,895.00.

CONTRIBUTION BY MEMBERS OF THE CLUB

Club members have been involved from the conceptualisation of the project, design, market survey and preparation of the BOQ. The Club will execute the project by direct labour, meaning that all labours will be recruited from the community and also all the required materials will also be purchased from them also. This will help to achieve another principle of local community economic empowerment. Added to this club members will be involved in the supervision of the project from start to completion.
