Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Nanded District ,Pune

Total Budget: $55,250

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Project Description

Consumption of contaminated and poor quality of drinking water causes many waterborne diseases in Nanded District, due to pesticides used in farming, leading to health issues, and in several cases even death, thereby adversely affecting the socioeconomic progress of the region. A study by Water Aid indicates that these issues negatively affect the health of women and children. In the project area bore wells serve as the only source of water as other sources such as dams and lakes are not available, rivers are seasonal and open wells are mostly dry. The ground water contains high concentration of minerals (such as fluoride) and bacteria (pathogens). As a result, there is scarcity of safe drinking water.

Objectives of the project are:

1. To provide equitable access to safe and potable drinking water in adequate quantity to the villagers. 2. Control the health issues faced by people in the region. Beneficiaries: This project shall be implemented in eleven villages and will benefit a population of approximately 22000 (as per Census 2011). Current projected population is approx. 28000. Area of project implementation: Nanded District, Maharashtra State, India The eleven villages identified are: Hottal, Kathewadi, Kushawadi, Galegaon, Gavabgaon, Borgao, Adampur, Atkali, Badur, Hipparga-Thadi and Wartala.

Implementation Process:

1. Need assessment survey.

2. Provision and Installation of Water ATM machine in local self- government premises (The machine will be installed in a lockable room)- based on need assessment report. 3. Training of the community representatives for routine operations and maintenance. 4. Community awareness highlighting the benefits of the project.

5. Health check-up camps.
