Greetings from India!
I hope that you, your family and all your friends as well as relatives are safe and healthy in these tough times. Although we're all caught up in the pandemic, Covid-19 in our own ways, yet to be true to the Rotary motto of serving humanity, I write to you to request you to participate with us in a Global Grant Project before the end of this Rotary Year 2019-20.
Rotary India under the leadership of RIPN Shekhar Mehta is conducting various training / strategic planning programmes through Virtual Meetings, which are proving to be very effective and purposeful. One of such major thrust areas is WATER and a mission namely ROTARY INDIA WATER MISSION has been launched with the acronym: W-A-T-E-R
W - Watershed Development
A - Awareness
T - Transformation of Water Bodies
E - Efficient use of Water
R - Rainwater Harvesting
I inform you with pride that Rotary in India have taken upon itself ambitious projects in the area of Water, which translates to a whopping 10% of the total work required to be done in the area of Watershed Development in India during the next 5 years, as estimated by the Government of India.
We require your support in this endeavour and to start with, for the following project for which we are proceeding to apply for a Global Grant to the tune of USD 71,500.
GLOBAL GRANT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF 51 SUPER GABION STRUCTURES (Improvised Gabion Structures by use of Concrete).
The Gabion Structures are 'Loose stone boulder Check Dams' constructed for soil and water conservation by controlling erosion and to stabilize steep slopes across a drain ditch / water channel to lower the velocity of flow of water. Reduced runoff velocity reduces erosion and gullying in the drain ditch / water channel and allows sediments to settle out. Normally Gabion structures are in the shape of a wall built using large stones / boulders, tied with steel wires / mesh and anchored to the banks of the drain ditch / water channel. We have improvised them by using concrete and grounding them by digging a foundation and then erecting them, thus making them sustainable for long periods of time. The water which would normally runoff the surface, leaving the communities living along the length of the drain ditch / water channel without water, is stopped by the Gabion Structures and in addition to reducing the velocity, it creates storage of the water by working as a Dam and also leads to groundwater recharge. The excess water overflows the structure and is captured by the subsequent Gabion Structure, built at a distance ahead in the drain ditch / water channel, thus leading to distributed storage and groundwater recharge along the length of the drain ditch / water channel, which effectively benefits large numbers of people living along the length of the drain / channel by giving them access to water throughout the year leading to improvement of their health and also economic prosperity by allowing them to reap more than 1 crop in a year. With the availability of drinking water throughout the year, the womenfolk don't have to travel long distances to fetch water, the health of the community improves and womenfolk are able to devote time for the welfare of their family, especially children, who start going to School regularly.
