Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Cape Verde

Location: Boavita Island

Total Budget: $30,250

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene

n the scope of the recognition that the Rotary Club Maria Pia da Praia has been developing with the ONGD ESTÍMULO, about the needs of these populations, we concluded that the situation of access to drinking water by the communities, although there is a community bore, is very precarious There are also schools without access to drinking water and sanitary facilities, although there is no open defecation. The water storage system exists but is very inadequate. The water is not treated and therefore the potability levels are very uncertain.

Governance structures are local. The distribution of water is precarious although it is unpaid, but community members would not have the financial capacity to pay.

Current hygiene and educational programs are inconsistent and do not include any call for attention to hand washing.

The program that we propose to develop from 2020, aims to:

• Supply school populations with drinking water

• To manage to minimize diseases transmitted by the consumption of non-drinking water.

• Build or rehabilitate sanitary facilities of the schools involved.

• Raise awareness and inform beneficiaries about the importance of maintaining and managing water points.

The project aims to build a water hole, its distribution, reservoir and rehabilitation of the schools' sanitary facilities and training room.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
