and managing water points.

COMMUNITY OR INSTITUTION TO BE BENEFITED

Comunidade da Povoação Velha, is located in the southwest of Boavista Island. This community has largely been benefited through the solid work that has been done by the local Associação Comunitária para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável Varandinha.

COMMUNITY GROUPS THAT WOULD RECEIVE A CLEAR, DIRECT AND IMMEDIATE BENEFIT AS A RESULT OF THIS PROJECT.

The Global health program that seeks to promote health, combating poverty and inequalities through partnerships, would have as direct beneficiaries all the inhabitants of the old town.

DEMOGRAPHIC DATA OF BENEFICIARIES.

The old village has around 1500 inhabitants, being their main activities, the fishing and crafts sale.

EVALUATION DATE

The needs assessment and survey of has been made during the last 6 months in the context of the work developed by Estimulo and local communities.

WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE EVALUATION FROM THE COMMUNITY?

The evaluation was conducted by Estimulo, the Associação Comunitária para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável Varandinha, the Rotary Club of Praia Maria Pia, the municipality of Boavista and a group of fishermen and fishmonger who represent the greatest force of income and work of the community.

WHAT NEEDS WILL THE PROJECT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT?

1. Construction of sanitary facilities for the community; 2. Building a training space for the different Community programmes, in the context of maternal and childhood health, primary care and sustainable community development; 3. Installation of drinking water distribution system by water tank to all referred infrastructure and community service; Community training in maternal and childhood health, primary care, community and associative development. Generically, the identified needs, will all be fulfilled under this programme.

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OR RESOURCES FROM THE COMMUNITY?

This community is very proactive, and working with these people needs a great involvement and personal delivery. Being a very remote community, they are very cohesive and persistent in its aims. A Associação para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável Varandinha, is a very well structured organization, that has been doing a great work within this community since several years. It is a strong element of social cohesion that allows the good use and maintenance of equipment.

CONSIDERING THE NEEDS AND STRENGTHS STATED ABOVE, HOW WAS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT DEFINED?

During the assessment of the community we found: 1. Clear lack of hygiene and health conditions; 2. Scarcity to drinking water access; 3. Absence of strategies for disease prevention, mainly transmitted due to lack of hygiene conditions 4. Persistent requests for community training considering its sustainable development, as well as in various areas of health and primary care and that: 1. The community has the capacity and willingness to participate in the proposed programmes; 2. There is a local community association able to coordinate and maintaining infrastructure in the future. It has also been understood that: A) The main objective would be to equip the community with a structure that would reap all the identified needs, consolidating this by associating it with a solid, diversified and sustainable training programme.

HOW CAN THE PROPOSED ACTIVITIES IN THE PROJECT ACHIEVE THE MAIN OBJECTIVE?

The construction of infrastructures, as well as the proposed training programme, will bring all the identified needs into line, thus achieving the proposed objectives.

WHAT CHALLENGES PREVENTED COMMUNITIES ALONE FROM ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES PROPOSED BY THE PROJECT?

To date, this community can never see these objections achieved by clear financial shortages and lack of resources.

HOW IS THE COMMUNITY MANAGING THESE DIFFICULTIES TODAY?

The community has sought solutions, and Estimulo has reached its contact. Nevertheless, has suffered until now the consequences of the precariousness of the hygiene and health conditions in which they live. Their remote location is a aggravating factor in the situation.

WHY ARE THE ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROJECT THE BEST WAY TO RESPOND THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY?

The proposed activities are the appropriate strategy for equipping the community with: 1. Sanitary facilities for community. 2. Training room for the different Community programmes, in the context of maternal and childhood health, primary care and sustainable community development. 3. Installation of drinking water distribution system by water tank to all referred infrastructure and community service. 4. Community training in maternal and childhood health, primary care, community and association development.
