Colombia has thousands of rural water systems created and maintained by small associations comprising a few families to 100 families. Each system typically obtains water from a river or a spring, relies on natural pressure and sometimes includes rudimentary treatment to reduce turbidity only. Biological contamination loads can be significant and cause acute diarrhea and parasites, especially in children.
This project, if fully funded, will supply 1,000 households with Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage systems, based on BioSand filters and the training and follow-up to ensure continued and long term usage. THIS PROJECT IS SCALABLE DEPENDING ON FUNDING AVAILABLE. Biosand filters have been selected for their long useful life and impact as shown in many Colombian Rotary projects since 2007. This Host club has several years of experience implementing this type of project using Global Grants and has good connections to several other Rotary clubs doing similar projects with Global Grants. The project is expected to start in late 2020 and take 2 years to complete. Funds are used for the purchase of materials, construction of the concrete filter body and community training and followup by contracted qualified persons. Rotary members are very involved in managing each of these activities and meet lots of rural families in the process.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
