Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Peru

Location: Santiago de Surco

Total Budget: $142,177

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

"Implementation of molecular equipment of less complex Genexpert for the timely and simultaneous diagnosis of tuberculosis and resistance to Rifampicin"

Community Need:

High incidence of tuberculosis cases in the country, requires rapid diagnostic methods and more sensitive than smear (classic diagnostic method). Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment cuts the chain of transmission of the disease in the community (contagion)

How was this need evaluated?

Peru is the second country with the highest number of estimated cases of tuberculosis (TB) in the Region of the Americas; It is located within the 30 countries with the highest number of cases of Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR) and Rifampicin Resistant TB (RR) worldwide and first in Latin America; MDR TB and RR RR are the most difficult types of tuberculosis to cure.

The Multidiagnostica GenXpert platform is a genetic test, based on the amplification and detection of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis DNA containing resistance genes to one of the key drugs in the treatment of tuberculosis such as Rifampicin.

The DIRIS Lima Sur has a population assigned by 2020 of 2,300,000 inhabitants; counting to date with two GenXpert teams, one in the María Auxiliadora Hospital (Villa María del Triunfo) and another in the Reference Laboratory of the DIRIS Lima Sur (Barranco), the latter provides diagnostic services to the health facilities of Barranco, Chorrillos and Surco; leaving the districts of Villa el Salvador and San Juan de Miraflores without GenXpert equipment.

Activities planned to address the need and how the project will be maintained in the long term:

There will be support from the National Reference Laboratory of Mycobacteria of the National Institute of Health who will be responsible for the training and training of the operative personnel in addition to being in charge of performing the annual quality controls and the respective monitoring.

The MINSA through the designated regions will hold awareness meetings within the coverage area of each team in order to disseminate the use of the new methodology. Likewise, the establishment of a sample flow will be coordinated to establish the appropriate transport of samples to be analyzed

Two equipment in this places: San Jose Villa El Salvador and Trebol Azul San Juan de Miraflores

Advance financing of the project: $72465.90 each

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
