Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Liberia

Location: Monrovia

Total Budget: $0

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The main objectives of the Monrovia College (Secondary) & Industrial Training School, Inc. Laboratory Expansion Project Grant is to provide administrators and educators with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) cross-disciplinary curriculum development certification training. The project will also provide safety materials, equipment, supplies, and furnishings that will enhance the functionality of the laboratory to accommodate cross-disciplinary curriculum projects, that will further enhance the basic education experience.

The training that the students will receive as a result of this grant will strengthen their basic education and expand the vocational training curriculum by adding problem solving skills, and creative and analytical thinking, needed to seek higher education and/or entrepreneurial endeavors in Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world.

The school has completed an extensive vendor search that both the Host and International partners will review and determine which materials and supplies can be procured locally and/or abroad.

Both the Host and International Clubs will utilize members and/or community volunteer educators as mentors locally and virtually to assist in STEAM theme and program development, reality-based lessons and project development and curriculum writing as needed.

The Administrator and Educators receiving certification from this grant will be required by the school to sign an agreement to retain their employment at the school for a two-year period to provide a well trained staff to insure the ongoing STEAM based training curriculum at Monrovia College & Industrial Training School, Inc.

The innovation that a STEAM based cross disciplinary curriculum can bring to the schools Biology, Chemistry and Physic laboratories in a vocational school environment is unlimited. The school will be provided with the opportunity to offer the community with training, science fairs, exhibition, career fairs and fundraisers to sustain the project after grant funding.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
