The main objective of this project is to purchase needed medical laboratory equipment for Madonna Hospital which serves a primarily rural population of approximately 1million people. This hospital serves the most vulnerable population who cannot afford services at private or governmental facilities. Madonna Hospital has recently achieved Tertiary Status which means that it offers three specialty services: Ophthalmology, Orthopedics and Surgery. The hospital staff hopes to add Maternal Child services in the near future.

This project will help provide needed laboratory equipment for the Madonna Hospital Laboratory. The majority of the lab tests are currently being done manually which is very time consuming and labor intensive. New automated laboratory equipment will provide rapid and accurate test results to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of disease. A formal Needs Assessment was done by Project C.U.R.E. and augmented by conversations between the Head of the Laboratory Department at Madonna Hospital and Cathy McNary, a laboratory scientist and past president of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists- Colorado Chapter.

The needed laboratory equipment includes: a mobile 5 part Differential Hematology Instrument (complete blood count and while blood cell differential), a semi-automated Chemistry Analyzer (comprehensive metabolic panel and lipid profile), an Electrolyte Analyzer (Sodium, Potassium Chloride, Bicarbonate, Magnesium), a water filtration system (providing purified water for the lab instruments), a Hematocrit centrifuge (determine total red blood cell volume), Hormonal Assay Instrument (LSH, FSH, Prolactin, TSH, T4, Progesterone, Testosterone, Estrogen) and 24 Centrifuge buckets (used to separate out blood and other fluids to be tested).

The cost of purchasing this lab equipment, installation, calibration, quality control, training of the staff to use the equipment and a 5 year maintenance contract is $51,297.

The Rotarians from the RC of Ft. Collins Breakfast will assist with fundraising. Rotarians from the RC of Umuahia will monitor the installation and calibration of the laboratory instruments as well as the training of the staff.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
