DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

Hello all,

Great news: the Ethiopia Small Business Development grant has been APPROVED!

Your club should have received the request from TRF to submit your funds this week!!! I understand that club funds can be sent directly to us here in Fargo (contact me for address etc) or, if you wish to send to TRF to obtain Paul Harris points, you can do that by following the instructions emailed to you from TRF.

Reach me any time at amh.belay@gmail.com for more information about any aspect of this project or process :) It is so exciting that 155 women will be starting new businesses in Northern Ethiopia thanks to your generosity!!!!!!

Exciting news! This grant has been approved and paid by RI. We will disperse the first installment of funds within 2 weeks. There are major holidays now in Gondar, so work would not begin until after the celebration of Timket (epiphany), which is celebrated around January 15th.

Thanks everyone for your support! Will you update again soon!

Our team in Gondar reports that the first teams of women have been trained and have started their new jobs making traditional Ethiopian bread (injera). I've posted some pictures in the Matchinggrants portal.

Twenty women have been trained in injera making (traditional bread) and 20 in sheep breeding. Receipts have been submitted and we are working to compile for the one year report due in December. The second half of the money will be sent to Ethiopia in October. We have interviewed several women by phone to learn about their experience and their new businesses--they reported heart-warming stories of feeling able to 'stand on their own, instead of like a beggar'. Gondar Fasiledes Rotary in Ethiopia has provided additional names and numbers this week for women who have participated, so more women will be interviewed. Due to COVID and the war in Ethiopia, this project has been a tremendous challenge. But we are so happy for the 40 new women that have jobs through your support. Thank you!

The final installment of funds were sent to Ethiopia and new recipients are now being trained and starting new jobs.

In February 2022, GCA Thrive partners from Fargo were able to visit Gondar, Ethiopia, and meet some of the recipients of this project, getting photos, videos, and interviews of the women and their new jobs. Women were making amazing progress in their businesses! Photos are included on the project page on the matching grants site.

GCA Thrive partner wrote an article for Rotary Magazine about this project and are waiting to see if the project will be considered for inclusion in the monthly Rotary magazine.

This project should be concluding in the next six months.

I am here in Ethiopia as I write this update. I have had the opportunity to meet with Wogen lead, Rotarian Hibste, and to visit five of the recipients of the project. I got a chance to interact with five women: Kasanesh & Tsehay (selling vegetables) and Meseret, Articlet, and Salem (traditional bread--injera--and small restaurant businesswomen). I've uploaded pictures of them. Look for the final report from this project coming soon.

Project is completed successfully in early 2023. Final report was submitted to RI several months ago. We are waiting on RI to review/accept report. I will send an email update to all who have contributed to this project as soon as the report has been reviewed and accepted by RI.

The final report for this project has been accepted by TRF and we are now officially done with this project!! So exciting! Thank you to everyone for your support. Many women have new jobs in Ethiopia and their families' lives have been changed because of this project! Hurray!
