Project Description Region: South-East Asia Country: India Location: Shivamogga Total Budget: $51,795 Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment The project is to help provide a Mammography unit, CR System, Ultrasound Scanning machine with UPS and other accessories for a Community Mammography Unit in Shimoga, necessary to improve the screening process in order to reduce the percentage of female population that is not covered by screening programs and increase the number of early-detected breast cancers. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. It is often characterized by a lack of early symptoms, which results in late detection of the disease. Detection at advanced stages of the decease implies the treatment is more difficult and uncertain. Breast cancer has ranked number one cancer among Indian females with age adjusted rate as high as 25.8 per 100,000 women and mortality 12.7 per 100,000 women. Data reports from various latest national cancer registries were compared for incidence, mortality rates.
