Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Honduras

Location: Santa Bárbara

Total Budget: $81,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The Honduras Teacher Empowerment grant aims to increase educational outcomes for Honduran students by empowering their teachers with the skills they need to raise the next generation of Honduran leaders. Our Rotary project is especially important given the focus on providing quality education and supporting educational access for students in the most vulnerable areas of Honduras. Our project aims to support 18 schools in Santa Barbara, Honduras, reaching approximately 150 teachers and 2,000 students over a four year period. This builds off of the success of Rotary Global Grant #1747029, in which we brought together teachers from twenty-four schools across El Progreso, Yoro to collaborate and engage in professional development opportunities. We seek to partner with Santa Barbara, a neighboring town, which faces similar educational realities and whose teachers and students are facing an immediate and urgent need for support due to the educational disruptions caused by COVID-19.

We are partnering with schools in rural areas where educational quality has been historically low, and which have been disproportionately impacted by the shift to distance learning. Pre-pandemic, less than 50% of Honduran youth completed primary school; by strengthening the capacity of teachers in under-resourced communities to support basic education and literacy, we are working to create positive systemic change. Given that half of Honduran students lack reliable internet access, there is a salient need for educational programming and training to support teachers in serving students who are at a greater risk of dropping out.

We will provide blended learning modules for teachers to implement, teach valuable technological skills, and aid teachers in adjusting their practices to COVID-19 realities. We have created a YouTube channel with modules for teachers to use as well. Additionally, we are piloting a text message program that will provide education to students who lack access to the internet, since Honduras has a higher rate of mobile phone penetration in rural areas. Through this grant, we will ensure that students who have been outside of the school system since the national lockdown in early March are able to continue with their schooling, focusing on lessons in core subjects. This pilot program will continue after schools begin re-opening so that those students who are unable or unwilling to return to school amidst the pandemic will still have access to education. Long-term, we will build an educational community across the 18 schools to provide avenues for teachers to learn, share, and grow; inspiring innovation and leadership as Honduran schools emerge from COVID-19. We will continue to collaborate with and reach for innovative solutions to this pressing educational challenge in Honduran schools through this Global Grant project.

Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

We are preparing for the first training at the launch of the new Honduran school year, February, 2020 and everything associated with those relationships and preparations. The school year in Honduras ended early due to elections so this delayed things a bit, but everything is moving along well. Wishing everyone well!

During the final time period of 2023 year, (from the last 4 mounths) we have developed:

- A semiannual workshop on September 21, 22, and 23: where 12 teachers and 12 principals from the Juncal and Guatemalia network in Santa Bárbara participated.

- Two monthly workshops, the first was on October 27 and the second on November 24.

- A school for parents, on November 23 at the Santos Guardiola school. The topic of this workshop was: how to take care of children's self-esteem.

We look forward to all of the great work to come in 2024!
