Our project technology skills for underprivileged students is to support 5 middle schools which educate indigenous Wixarika (Huichol language) students as well as those students in marginalized neighborhoods in the smaller cities and towns through after-school programs. In material support, chief among our aims is to provide these schools computer equipment so that students learn to code and program and to build programmed robotic apparatuses.
Actually our Club has this project currently involves only 22 of 183 likely students: Both students' families and schools have scarce financial resources at best; those very few who could afford to participate financially have done so but cannot manage more. In short, funds simply are insufficient for the purchase of computers, printers, and related materials. Hence, 161 students do not have the opportunity to participate in the after-school program.
Strengths of the Project
In spite of the lack of resources, the project has enjoyed some success. The 22 students have developed programming skills sufficient to apply them to building apparatuses useful in daily life: alarms, digital counters, digital thermometers, laser-guided distance measuring tools, LED display sequencers, and basic robots that can provide elementary guidance in cars on some highways.
The timeline for our proyect is according to this actions: 1 month for Training teachers and schools equipment, computer and maintenance permanently by club rotario xalisco, students learn to program and codding during a school year.
The students involved moreover and without exception have seen their grades improve in reading, mathematics, and the sciences.
The project has further demonstrated that a teacher trained in modern technology is indispensable in student learning of programming and the use of computers and their products.
All school directors fully support the use of their classrooms and other spaces for the project.
Prospective Outcomes
With the support of Districts and the Rotary Clubs, significant benefits can be extended to all 183 students in the current project school, in addition to those in the projected four other schools, which total over 1000 students and 15 teachers awaiting training: three schools in marginalized areas of the city of Tepic and the towns of Tuxpan and Santiago Ixcuintla, and two schools attended by the Wixarika in the municipalities of El Nayar and La Yesca, all within the state of Nayarit in Mexico.
Commitments of the Rotary Club of Xalisco
- Support with economic resources the training of the 15 teachers needed, throughout the 5 schools.
- Select the 5 beneficiary schools, who will deliver a project commitment letter, signed by the school directors and all students' parents.
- Perform continuous follow-ups regarding learning activities, use of resources and care of equipment.
