Floriano is a small city in the state of Piauí, at the Northeast of Brazil.
Although the city is located betwen the biomes of cerrado and caatinga and next to the Parnaíba river, many rural areas still face water shortages. These problems are making local families consume non-potable water from smaller rivers and streams. The same water is also used for irrigation and shared with the farming animals.
Reaffirming the access to clean water in a suitable quantity as an essential human right, The Rotary Club of Floriano Medio Parnaíba , through its partners, became close to this reality. The Club is applying a project that can alleviate this problem in most rural localities of the city.
The project would provide water supply pipeline systems to 87 residences in the rural area of Floriano-Piauí who live in the conditions described above. Besides the difficult access to quality water, this area is also constantly facing droughts. The funding sought in this submission will be used to acquire equipment for a water distribution network in the localities of the rural area, from already drilled wells.
Meetings with the community have already been held to help drafting this Project. Subjects such as the importance of health and hygiene in disease prevention and the rational use of water will be discussed in workshops. These workshops will be offered to the community by the Rotarian partners and the families will be encouraged to improve the variety of their vegetable production in these moments too.
Besides relieving the water supply problems, this project contributes to prevent diseases, to enhance environmental care and to stimulate the economical evolution of the communities.
DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
