We would like to present and summarize our Global Grant Project. It consists of an important humanitarian action to help needy and handicapped people, and to promote better environmental conditions. The focus area is: WATER RESOURCES AND SANITATION, AND ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
We have been trying to understand our community needs and concerns, so we have had the chance to visit, observe and feel those needs through ADEFILP (ASSOCIATION OF HANDICAPPED PEOPLE OF LENÇÓIS PAULISTA). It is an inclusive association of people with disabilities using the recycling of solid waste for income. ADEFILP collects recyclable materials and selects them for better prices. It is located in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo State, Brazil. The Association needs equipments to improve their production and income; to speed up material collection; to promote better working conditions to help more needy people and, most importantly, to ensure financial conditions to support high expenses. The participants, however, are facing difficulties to do their job, and these equipments make the work easier, since many of them cannot work because of physical problems.
ADEFILP is the only Association that cares about poor and disabled people in Lençóis Paulista. The recycling materials market is the way that the ADEFILP has found to pay for expenses and survive helping needy people. This work began in 1997, whose objective is to integrate and include handicapped people in society through income generation, making people feel useful. The first members created the project "Converting waste into social currency". In the year of 2001 it was partnered with Lençóis Paulista City in the "Clean and Solidary City Project", which won the United Nations Organization award in 2006 as one of the ten best practices in local management in Brazil. The Association does an important job using labor of many people that would not be used by any other institution since they have lower productivity.
The association helps disabled people find a place in the job market. Also, ADEFILP perforns a work that is incumbent to the municipality in compliance with the National Policy on Solid Waste, that is the municipalities' obligation to do the recycling, alone or in partnership with other associations. The recycling market activity has allowed the association to be self sufficient. ADEFILP contributes to improve the quality of life in Lençóis Paulista and sustainable development for the correct solid wast destination resulting in better conditions of environmental sanitation. Other advantages achieved by the ADEFILP´s project are: extention of the life cycle of the materials by recycling; preservation of natural resources; support of low-income citizens; extention of the useful life of the landfill; preventing waste from contaminating rivers, and contributing to citizen education.
